After 5 very successful but rather unfulfilling years working in the advertising industry in Puerto Rico, I finally had enough. I needed to do something bananas and get a major creative jumpstart; the 9-to-9 routine of an advertising creative and the geographic, cultural, and social limits of a 100×30 island in the middle of the ocean were slowly chipping away at my soul. I was happy with getting home with enough time and energy to catch a quick game of Xbox on my plasma TV before I passed out, and maybe catch half a day of beach time over the weekend before Monday came along again. Fuck that. I need more radness in my life.
So now I’m getting rid of all my stuff, packing up my bags, saying goodbye to my beloved island, and embarking on a month-long journey to California on the almighty SuperYaris. I begin by traveling north from Florida to visit most major cities on the east coast, with the intent to connect with old acquaintances I haven’t seen for far too long. Afterwards, I will head out west along the northern US, traveling and camping across the badlands and national parks, then heading south for a bit of midwest desert adventure, and finally arriving at my destination in Los Angeles. Once here, I plan to spend a good amount of time working on personal projects, collaborating with a fascinating crowd of artists and technologists, and developing skillsets I never had the time and energy to learn with the grueling and soul-sucking schedule of an advertising creative.
This blog’s purpose is to document this trip as thoroughly as possible, as well as opening channels of communication with the amazing friends I leave behind in PR, and those I visit along the way. Follow along, comment, watch, and listen… the only thing more satisfying than going on this journey, is the knowledge that you guys are coming along with me on it. Pack your bags, finish that coffee, and hop on the passenger seat; we have a long drive ahead.
